The Secret of Great Niche Ideas

Struggling to find niche ideas to promote online? Well, I will get to that (and soon!), but first let me get off track for just half a minute...

"I want to hear Korn!," my youngest son demands from the back seat of the car. This would not be a strange request from your typical Rock-Band-Playing-Guitar-Hero-Wannabe teen. However, this Korn fan is only three years old!

Now, before you go jumping to conclusions about my parenting skills, you must realize that I have spent many hours trying to push the typical upbeat toddler music on this little rocker. The Wiggles, Dan Zanes, Laurie Berkner, even Kidz Bop (yes, I am THAT desperate!).

But all I hear is... "I want KORN!"

OK, so I give up.

I shouldn't be surprised. My youngest son's first three words were mama, dada, and psycho-momo (that's "baby speak" for motorcycle).

He prefers a good stunt bike show to Mickey Mouse any day.

And he likes to cover his body in tattoos - temporary ones (at least for now!).

I could keep going, but I'm sure you get the picture.

"Focus on What You Know"

Focus on what you know.  If you have been in the niche marketing field for any length of time, you will surely come across that valuable piece of advice.

Take my toddler, for example. What if he were twenty years older and looking for niche ideas to make money online? Knowing what I told you about him, would you advise him to build a website promoting handbags, or Kenny G, or Barbie dolls? No! That would be ridiculous, wouldn't it?

However, that's what many internet marketers do. They pick a topic in which they have no passion and very little knowledge, and then wonder why they struggle in this business.

I'm guilty. Are you?

Focus on what you know. Simple advice, but yet so hard to follow. Why?

I think it boils down to the fact that it's really not that simple, after all. There's too many diversions. Take keyword tools, for example. I have dismissed more than one niche idea simply because I didn't like the numbers. Not enought demand. Too much competition. I may have a lot to say on the subject, but I'm only going to say it if I think it's worth my while. I'm here to make money, after all.

So, I keep plugging in niche ideas until I find that magic number, where demand is high and competition is low. I know the topic can be monetized, so I'm off and running...for a month, maybe two. And then I run out of things to say! Blank slate. I struggle to prepare blog posts, and put off writing articles and exchanging links, because to be quite honest, I could really care less.

It's so easy to fall into this trap. There are ways to muddle through, and I will talk about that in future posts. However, if you are just getting started and are looking for good niche ideas, the first place you should look is in the mirror! Your interests, your passions.

You can make it by faking it, but you have a better chance if you don't...

I hope you come back...

I have a lot more to say on this topic, and would love if you bookmarked my site or subscribed to my feed.
